5 Reasons Pre-School Years Are A Prime Time For Learning

Much of the discussion about education focuses on the K-12 years, but some early childhood education experts suggest serious learning can start even earlier and pay dividends for the child in years to come.
“Young children have the capacity at a very young age to be academically challenged, and we need to educate them strongly during those years instead of waiting until they are older,” says Alise McGregor, founder of Little Newtons (www.littlenewtons.com), an early education center with locations in Minnesota and Illinois.
“Children’s minds are like sponges when they are very young. Under age 5 is the most important time for development and our best opportunity to set up children for success. If we strongly educate children at a very young age, while their brains are so pliable, by the time they reach kindergarten, their brain capacity is much higher.”
Recent research confirms that the first five years of life are particularly important for the development of the child's brain. Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child reports that in the first few years, more than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second, building the brain’s architecture.
This growth of the brain’s network establishes a fertile foundation for learning, thus an opportunity to be better prepared for grade school and beyond, experts say. One analysis of several studies, “Impacts of Early Childhood Education on Medium- and Long-term Education,” showed that children exposed to high-quality pre-kindergarten education performed better academically in later years. Early education also led to higher graduation rates, fewer special education placements and less grade retention.
McGregor suggests five reasons parents should consider ramping up their pre-K child’s education:
• Socialization. Socialization with people other than the child’s family in a safe environment is an essential foundational element. “It’s important to introduce our children to other children and support their transition into their own friendship groups, and the earlier we do this, it helps children overcome shyness and gain self-confidence,” McGregor says.

• Personal experiences. These assist the brain’s organizational development and functioning in many situations, helping children develop learning skills as well as social and emotional abilities. “A good early-education center creates an environment where imagination, love and innovation all come together for a daily adventure,” McGregor says.
• Enthusiasm for Learning. Lessons can be given in a fun and exciting way that will encourage children to be effective learners. “Feeling inspired and excited to learn takes root in preschool,” McGregor says, “and can last a lifetime.”
• Learning respect for others. A fundamental building block for happiness, friendships and success in life starts early by learning how to share, cooperate, take turns and be nice. “By carrying on conversations, following rules, listening, accepting consequences of actions, the child learns early how to start getting along in the world,” McGregor says.
• Resilience. It’s important that early childhood educators and parents work together to develop resilience in children as early as possible. “By creating a consistent and stable environment with clear expectations and predictable consequences, children can develop skills in managing themselves and their emotions,” McGregor says. “They may experience bumps, bruises or losing a game, but this is the foundation for building coping strategies for greater challenges in life.”
“The first five years of life are the most critical,” McGregor says. “It is far easier to train a child than it is to fix a broken adult.”

Pool safety guide

It's easy to lose track of kids during a big holiday party, that's why I wanted to share pool safety tips to keep everyone safe this summer.

A child can accidentally drown in 20 seconds and unlike what you see in the movies, kids don't yell for help. That's why every pool party should have a designated water watcher while kids are in the pool, and layered safety barriers to keep kids out when parents aren't around.

Rules for water watchers:

Sit close to the edge of pool

Do a regular headcount of swimmers

Step in when play gets too wild

No texting, reading or watching videos

Don't leave the pool area without a replacement

Kids never want the party to end, which is why Life Saver Pool Fence also advocates installing multiple barriers to keep kids from entering the pool when parents aren't around. It's especially important for toddlers who don't understand the danger.

Please check out these links for further information. Let's keep kids safe.

Does Your 7-Year-Old Really Need Braces?

Braces are often a rite of passage for middle school students with overbites or crooked teeth.
But the oral problems those braces are solving likely started way back in elementary school – possibly as early as first or second grade.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends children make their first visit to an orthodontist no later than age 7.
“That doesn’t mean they are going to get braces,” says Dr. Jamie Reynolds, an orthodontist, national and international lecturer and author of “World Class Smiles Made in Detroit” (www.AskDrReynolds.com). “In fact, it’s pretty unusual to put braces on a child that young.”
But with those early visits, the orthodontist might be able to head off problems before they get worse. Reynolds says these are a few of the things an orthodontist would be checking with your child:
• Are the jaws growing properly? You would think the upper jaw and the lower jaw grow pretty much in tandem, but you would be wrong. The upper jaw stops growing around age 8 while the lower jaw keeps on growing like the rest of the body. That means orthodontists can spot problems with the upper jaw earlier and recommend treatment if it’s needed, Reynolds says.
• Is there enough room for the teeth to grow in? Sometimes permanent teeth don’t have enough room to grow in properly, possibly because a baby tooth is in the way. Generally, baby teeth fall out on their own, but occasionally a stubborn one needs to be pulled so that the permanent tooth doesn’t start growing in an awkward direction and become impacted. “Removing a misbehaving baby tooth is often the simplest and best solution to a problem that could become much bigger,” Reynolds says.
• Are there too few or too many teeth? One of the things an orthodontist would do when examining a young child is to make sure the correct number of permanent teeth are forming. Extra teeth can be removed, but if a child is a tooth or two short the orthodontist will wait until all the permanent teeth are in before starting any treatment. “Before I went to dental school, I assumed everyone had the same number of teeth – 32,” Reynolds says. “But it’s not unusual at all to see people with missing teeth or with extra teeth.”
• Does the child snore?  Snoring is a potential sign of sleep apnea, a condition in which a person stops breathing while sleeping. It can cause serious health problems and has been diagnosed in children as early as 4 or 5 years old. One common and treatable type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, in which the airways become partially or completely blocked by the tongue or fatty tissues of the throat. An orthodontist can widen the child’s palate so the upper jaw expands, and that expands the nasal passages. It also provides more room for the tongue so it rests on the roof of the mouth and not the bottom.
“Usually, orthodontists offer complimentary exams so it really is a good idea to have your child checked out by an orthodontist at age 7,” Reynolds says. “The odds are that no treatment will be necessary. But if problems are starting to develop, early detection could make a big difference.”
About Dr. Jamie Reynolds

Dr. Jamie Reynolds (www.AskDrReynolds.com) is recognized on an annual basis as one of the top orthodontists in metro Detroit. His book, “World Class Smiles Made in Detroit,” puts an emphasis on the many benefits of having a great smile. Reynolds – who is a national and international lecturer on high-tech digital orthodontics and practice management – attended the University of Michigan for both his undergrad education and dental studies, and did his orthodontic residency at the University of Detroit-Mercy.

Funny Toddler Tales

If your looking to add another book to your shelf to read then grab this one. "The sh!t no one tells you about Toddler". A very humorous book about what majority moms go through in the toddler stage. It's funny and packed full of real life stories and mishaps. The author is very funny and gives you a run down of all the things she has dealt with. I have enjoyed sitting down and reading this book because I caught myself many times laughing out loud. This is the guide to Surviving the Toddler Years.

Trust me after reading this, you will no longer feel like you are the only one. Whether it is the tantrums, the pouting or constantly hurting themselves, the guide covers it. Each chapter just keeps you laughing about what real life moms and the author have gone through. Even included is professionals to give their insight. So grab the book and read it for yourself or give it as a gift!

What people are saying:

"Frank and funny in her approach (the first chapter is entitled “You Suck at This”), she also deals soberly with such weighty matters as balancing work and family, reconciling parenting styles, and keeping marriages and partnerships together...Dais offers a commonsense yet comical view of the toddler years, which she wryly sums up as a “confusing cluster-f of a time.”
—Publishers Weekly

“It's a perfect gift for expecting parents who have a good sense of humor and appreciate a frank, candid look at the ugly-yet-wonderful side of parenting.”
—Motherhood Moment

“Not only does it comfort me by informing me that my toddlers' alien behaviors are common and that I'm not alone, it provides a lot of comic relief, and it also provides a lot of great tips on how to address common challenges that many parents of toddlers face.”

Myrtle Waves at Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Hi everyone, I wanted to tell you about another fun place to check out while in SC. It is a Water Park called Myrtle Waves. Plenty to do for the whole family! If you are a family like mine, then you probably have young ones that can't swim yet. That is why I really enjoyed letting my girls play here. There is two areas for kids to play, one with slides and spraying water and the other is a small pool where the young toddlers are able to walk across the whole thing. Plus there is cute water creatures that are set up through the small pool for kids to sit on.

There are plenty of slides to choose from and also a lazy river. Concession stands are available and a gift shop. Another nice feature that was there, was a huge wave pool. Do not worry, there is life jackets readily available right by and life guards and park associates at every post. My kids had so much fun and we are looking forward to the next time we can go back. Oh I also meant to say that there is plenty of seating area, but get there early so you can find the person spot. You can also rent cabanas for your family. There was only a couple downfalls. Which was that there was not enough shaded area and to exit the park you have to watch for traffic because you are going through the parking lot.

Potty stop while traveling

Oh no, your traveling down the road on vacation and you hear a voice hollering. "Mom Potty Now!" from your little boy. Your first thought is where is the nearest stop but you know the bathrooms are filthy or especially it just can't wait another 10 miles. So what are you to do? All of the bottles you had are already thrown out and no one is willing to sacrifice their drink for the call of nature. Have no fear mom, the number one cup is to the rescue.

Very sturdy bottle with screw top lid and see through so you know what is in there. Plus it has a cute cross bone image on one side to let you know don't drink! Another feature is it came with 3 wet wipes for clean up. It is leak proof so have no fear of the urine getting anywhere. I really love this container, although I may not have any young boys in the family I do have my husband. He is the worst of having to make a stop on the go. We parents know that there is times that you just don't have a facility close by or even a clean one for that matter. Retails 14.95

Potty Training Tips

If you are a new parent, then I am sure that you have realized at some point, potty training will be on the agenda. Potty training can be confusing to the ones who haven't had to do it before. Or maybe the way it worked for one of your kids, isn't working for this one. Don't worry, I have the answer to your problem.

"Oh Crap! Potty Training", is a very informative but yet humorous book. It covers the entire process from beginning to end. I find that it has a very positive outlook to the whole process and walks you through preparing and the mental readiness. I like also how this book covers some of the "myths and facts" that most struggle with. I myself am trying this book out for my self to get my youngest out of pull ups and into the big girls stage. She is wanting to be the stubborn one and only go when she feels like it.

If you would like to purchase the book, you can do so here.

Stress relief coloring

Who says coloring is just for kids? I know from my own personal experience I love to color when I need to take my mind off things. But...I am not in the mood for cartoon characters. That is why I love this book for adults called "Mandalas Coloring for Artists". This is not a tiny book like regular coloring books. Each page will keep you busy for a period of time with all the detail.

As a mom, life is stressful. There is not one day goes by as parents we do not have something going on. Did you have a stressful day with work or kids been a hand full? Grab this book and prepare to color your problems away.

You can find these books online at amazon or other retailers like Barnes & Noble. Be prepared to be wowed.

Tips from the Nanny

Hey everyone!

I'm Suzie and I have been a nanny for over 8 years now. I love my job and sometimes it can get a bit hard at times especially on the days where kids don't have school and you need to figure out what to do to get their energy out. I'm all for having the kids choose activities most of the time; however, if there are more than one child in your care it can get kinda hard and frustrating when one kid wants to do one activity and the other wants to do something else. Now in this case, I use both activities of course in one day however, picking which activity to do first can be the trickiest and hardest part because I don't want the kids to think I'm choosing favorites or that one of their ideas is better than the other. One great way to plan out fun things to do is to write down ideas on a beach ball and throw it to the kids, whatever activity their left finger lands on (or any finger on any hand for that matter) that's the activity that will be done first and we just keep on doing it until the day is planned. The great thing about this - is that you can pretty much use this ball idea for anything…from deciding on activity like I mentioned, to what to have for dinner and much more! I hope this is helpful to some of you!

Thank you for reading and a big Thank you to Jessica for letting me be a guest blog!

Vibrant Supplies from Debbie Lynn Inc.

Parents it is not to early to be thinking about school supplies for the new year. So why not add a bit of fun to your child's supplies. With Debbie Lynn Inc. there is so much to behold! Fun emoticon thumb tacks and thought bubble chalk boards to even silly nose shaped pencil sharpeners. Every item from this company is fun and colorful and just begs to be used. Each item is very affordable and you can find them online or at Five Below and other stores.

I was given a box full of really neat items to look over and give my opinion on. Every item that was in there is so neat. A few of the items that I really got a giggle over was the post a notes pad that was shaped like poo or the other ones that said crap. Each stationary item is just something to add to each adult or child's personality. Why not buy some for the teacher? Carolina Castile Soap Review

As a stay at home mom, I found myself bored at times and needed a escape. This is where I finally decided to make home made soaps. I stumbled upon a recipe to make my own baby wash/shampoo. I saw that I needed a liquid castile soap for my base. That is when I ran across the opportunity to review Carolina Castile Soap. A business that is in my state. There are many products to choose from, so I chose the lavender castile to put in my wash. It is a great scent to add in for the calming effect for bedtime. The bottle I received is a really good sized bottle. It has a good sturdy bottle with a flip top cap to ensure that the right amount is measured out. Castile is the greatest way to go to be natural with harsh chemicals. If you would like to purchase any products then please feel free to visit their site at Carolina Castile Soap.

So what can you make with Castile Soap?

    • shampoo
    • laundry detergent
    • mopping solution
    • dish soap
    • body wash
    • and more!
Carolina Castile has other scents available like: Tea Tree, Orange, Peppermint, Gentle Unscented.

A moment to shake my head at Goodwill

I typically don't have much to say usually about the crazy things I see while shopping, but this just made me shake my head. A few days ago I was shopping at my local Goodwill to find my girls some summer clothes. While I was just browsing the aisle I overheard a mom and young girl raving over something on the shoe rack. I personally thought "OK nothing new". As I looked up the mom was pointing to some extremely high heeled boots and was saying I have a similar pair at home. Once again I was like ok big deal but then what the little girl and mom did just baffled me. The mom grabbed the boots off the shelf and handed them to her daughter to try on. The girl was only like 12 at most! The girl said "ooo mom are going to buy me a pair!?". The mom agreed if the shoes fit, which unfortunately they did.

I am personally shocked and outraged at this choice. There is a difference between little wedges and the high heeled boots. It is not ok in my book to let your daughter wear these things when she is so young. Children should be dressing to their age and not be parading around in outfits and shoes that would otherwise suggest they are older. It bothers me to see these young children prancing around in skimpy clothes and their bottoms hanging out! Problems arise when you just let your children dress and act however they think is "Cool". Children need to be children, not dressing like adults. Also this child could severely hurt herself if she was to fall in those heels. Am I the only one that sees the problem here with moms letting their daughters dress provocatively?

While I am at it, I thought I would tell you how wonderful the Burt's Bees products are. Each one is perfectly made for your special little bundle of joy. There are so many to choose from to use. I love the lotion because it is unscented and goes on very easily with no greasy after feel. I know that no parent wants their child to look like a little grease ball. The skin feels amazingly smooth and well moisturized. The shampoo and wash is also unscented which is a big plus for those that have sensitive skin, also it is tear free!
